Fresno City College’s Associated Student Government (ASG) appointed four senators, hosted guest speakers addressing the State Center Federation of Teachers (SCFT) authorization to strike and discussed this semester’s fall carnival during their meeting in the Senate Chambers of Student Activities, Tuesday Sept. 8

New senators included Gabrielle Ramirez, Noor Brar, Eann Hernandez and Christopher Naranjo.

Brar, a nursing major, proposed fundraising ideas before her appointment to the senate and said she wants to create a comfortable environment on campus where students can get to know each other.

“I want everyone to be comfortable and just involve every culture, every person.” Brar said. “I just want something fun, trendy that everyone can connect with, you know, and just feel like it’s like a safe space to open up, talk to new people, connect, and make friends.”

Hernandez, majoring in business administration said he has experience in fundraising as the business and finance club’s treasurer.

“My goals are to get more people to have more school spirit, because I think that’s what a lot of people lack here, I just want them to be more proud and more showing off how they’re proud of Fresno City College,” Hernandez said.

Ramirez is a political science major and cited her prior experience in leadership.

“I did it [leadership] all throughout high school,” Ramirez said. “I would love to take all of that experience and apply that here for our student body and see how we can better it as a whole.”

Biology major Christopher Naranjo said he was president of the student body at his high school before arriving at FCC.

“I really enjoy being involved in the campuses I’m a part of, so that’s kind of my motivation for joining the ASG here at Fresno City,” Naranjo said.

General and organic chemistry instructor, Rebecca Cherry, gave a powerpoint presentation detailing the SCFT demands and the State Center Community College District response.

Physics and astronomy instructor Michael Ragsdale delivered a condensed version of the  SCFT negotiations statement to students.

The statement explained that faculty has been working without a contract for over a year, that a strike is historically unlikely but students are welcome to ask questions, attend board of trustee meetings or join instructors at picketing events and encouraged students to do their own research on the topic.

Jasleen Ganger, ASG vice president, was appointed as fall carnival chair, meaning she’ll oversee the organization of ASG’s haunted house attraction during the event.

Ganger said she’s open to ideas but suggested the theme be “Haunted Asylum.”

President Singh Bains said he met with Michelle Smith, Interim vice president of Student Services, to discuss improvements for the campus. He said she’ll likely be present at ASG’s meeting on Sept. 22.
