One of two people who died when a small plane crashed at a San Diego airfield earlier this week was identified Thursday as a 45-year-old man.
Roger Shimizu died at the scene of the crash late Monday afternoon at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport, the county Medical Examiner’s office said. His city of residence was not immediately available. The identity of the second person in the crash remained pending.
The four-seat Cessna 172 may have stalled before it hit the ground, according to a brief preliminary report the Federal Aviation Administration posted earlier this week.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, initial reporting indicates the crash happened during a “go-around,” which is essentially an aborted landing attempt that requires the pilot to keep the plane aloft to re-enter the traffic pattern and try again.
The NTSB said it preliminarily appears the plane caught fire after impact.
