One of Mexico’s most recognized cumbia groups will help kick off Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations in Southern California with two events, including Los Angeles’ traditional El Grito celebration at City Hall.

The first event will take place in the San Fernando Valley, where Los Angeles City Councilmember Imelda Padilla, who represents Council District 6, will honor Los Ángeles Azules, the internationally renowned cumbia legends, with the unveiling of a plaza bearing the group’s name in Panorama City.

The celebration will take place on Sept. 14 at the intersection of Van Nuys Boulevard and Chase Street, where members of Los Ángeles Azules will leave their handprints in cement at Plaza del Valle. The event begins at 9 a.m.

The second event, El Grito, will take place Sept. 15 at Los Angeles City Hall. The free celebration will run from 5 to 10 p.m. and will feature Los Ángeles Azules, Estradafoo, Trish Toledo and comedian Concrete.

Originally from Iztapalapa, Mexico City, Los Ángeles Azules have built a career spanning five decades, bringing their music and distinctive Mexican cumbia sound to international stages with songs including “Cómo te voy a olvidar,” “El listón de tu pelo” and “17 años.”

The group, which has received numerous music awards, is currently on its “Cumbia Sin Fronteras US Tour.”
