An alleged trespasser was stopped outside former Vice President Kamala Harris’ Malibu home Friday night.
Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were not home at the time, according to Eduardo Negrón, a spokesperson for Harris.
“Last night, security personnel stopped an individual who illegally entered Vice President Harris and Second Gentleman Emhoff’s property before the individual reached the home,” Negrón said in a statement. “Vice President Harris and Second Gentleman Emhoff were not present. They are grateful to the security and law enforcement personnel who responded swiftly.”
Deputies from the Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff’s station confirmed to multiple media outlets that they responded about 10:30 p.m. Friday to a suspicious person call at the residence, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
When deputies arrived, they made contact with the private security detail on the property. The person was outside the property, was warned and advised to leave, and left voluntarily without incident, the department said.
Deputies took a trespassing report, but no arrests were made. The department said patrols in the area would be increased as a precaution.
Authorities did not identify the person.
Harris served as San Francisco district attorney, California attorney general and U.S. senator before becoming vice president.
Former vice presidents, their spouses and children under 16 are eligible for Secret Service protection for up to six months after leaving office, under federal law. Former President Joe Biden extended Harris’ protection beyond that period before leaving office, but President Donald Trump revoked the extension in 2025.
“This is another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation in the form of firings, the revoking of security clearances and more,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement at the time. “This puts the former Vice President in danger and I look forward to working with the governor to make sure Vice President Harris is safe in Los Angeles.”
Harris and Emhoff bought the Malibu home within the past year, according to Politico.
