Paul Hugh Slaughter

OBITUARY

Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle and Papa, Paul Hugh Slaughter was loved and special in every one of his many roles.

Paul was born on October 15, 1935 in Arkansas. As soon as he graduated from high school, he enlisted in the Air Force. He attended the College of Emporia, Kansas where he graduated in 1960 with a major in History and English. In 1968 he received his Master of Arts in English from San Diego State College. Paul loved to read and was a lifelong learner.

While at College of Emporia, he met his wife Clara Vialpando, to whom he was married for fifty-one years. After college, he joined the US Navy Reserve as an Ensign Officer and was honorably discharged in 1961. The couple then moved to Vista, CA and Paul started his teaching career at Potter Junior High School in Fallbrook.

Paul later transitioned to Civil Service and worked in Human Resources in Alexandria Virginia, Beaufort South Carolina, Coronado and Camp Pendleton before serving in overseas assignments including Rota Spain and Subic Bay Philippines. In 1995, he retired after 32 years of loyal and dedicated Federal Service. He continued teaching college extension classes at Palomar Junior College, La Verne and University of Maryland.

Paul and Clara loved traveling and had fun at places as diverse as the theatre in London, castles in Germany and the outdoor shopping markets in the Philippines, Spain, Morrocco, Korea and Japan. Their home was filled with fond memories and many treasures from their many excursions.

Family was always Paul’s most important priority, and he was very proud of his three children, Diana, Michael and Kenny. He supported them by volunteering in charity events, playing in golf tournaments, and remaining a welcome force in their lives well into adulthood. He was a major presence at his grandson Sean Paul’s karate tournaments and soccer games.

After his wife’s passing, Paul enjoyed time at the North County Widows and Widowers Club, where he made new friends and enjoyed many hours of dancing, dining and playing golf.

Paul was predeceased by his wife Clara (2010), and is survived by his daughter, Diana Slaughter Aaron, his son Michael Slaughter and wife Deborah, his son Kenneth Slaughter and his wife Linda, and his grandson, Sean Paul Aaron.
