Tobin “Toby” Hinkle

OBITUARY

Tobin Hufstader Hinkle passed away August 12, 2026, at the age of 74. Toby put up a brave fight with his cancer issues, which were many. Finally the cancer, the treatments, the COPD and pneumonia were just too much.

Toby was the third of seven children to Nancy Hanks Hufstader Hinkle and James Currey Hinkle, both educators. Early Toby was recognized as very intelligent. He spent three years at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, earning honors on the Dean’s list five of his six semesters. He would go on to Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, and graduate in 1974. He was the editor of The Brushing, his college poetry publication.

Toby returned to the family home and never left. When Jim passed away, Toby became Nancy’s caregiver as well as son. Toby loved music; he and his friends entertained many in the San Diego area, especially at the family house where Nancy and Toby’s friends would gather regularly for cards, drinks, music and fun on a regular basis. Toby played the standup bass and bass guitar.

Toby had many loves: The stars and the wonder of the cosmos, his nieces and nephews, gardening and watching plants grow, recycling, animals and pets, watching golf pros struggle in the majors.

Toby was a kind and gentle soul and will be missed by all. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, October 11, 4-7pm at the Hinkle House in his beautiful backyard.
