Re “For Midway Rising, the road has been long and bumpy” (Sept. 6): Michael Smolens makes many good points in his piece on the status of Midway Rising. San Diego has made giant missteps in past real estate endeavors. The Midway area is not only tired, it’s worn-out and not close to highest and best use.

The project will bring an opportunity to deliver a state-of-the-art coastal development, with housing, parks and an arena that Stan Kroenke (who built SoFi Stadium with $5 billion privately funded and took less than four years to complete) has signed up to develop. It may just lead to a new pro sports franchise coming to our town.

When I hear discussion about “giving up potential future property tax revenue” I am reminded of something I learned in grade school — 100% of zero is still zero.

Negotiate a fair deal and get it done, San Diego!
