Kaiser Permanente’s Railyards Medical Center in Sacramento reached a construction milestone, promising a 2029 opening to bolster healthcare and economic growth

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The new Kaiser Permanente Railyards Medical Center in Sacramento reached a major construction milestone Wednesday as crews placed the final beam on the highest point of the eight-story facility.

The project broke ground in March 2025. 18 months later, construction continues on the medical center, which is expected to open in 2029.

Once complete, the facility will serve hundreds of thousands of patients and is also expected to serve as a major anchor for the broader Railyards redevelopment project.

The Railyards Medical Center sits near other major projects, including the new Sacramento Republic FC soccer stadium and a new live music venue.

Kaiser Permanente says the new facility will bring hospital care, emergency services, maternity services, and additional specialty care to downtown Sacramento.

Kaiser’s existing hospital, about six miles away on Morse Avenue, will remain open until the new Railyards facility opens and replaces it in 2029.

Jay Robinson, senior vice president for Kaiser Permanente Sacramento and South Sacramento, said the project represents more than just an expansion of health care services.

“I think it means a lot for the city of Sacramento. I keep saying that we’re in a renaissance period for Sacramento redefining itself, and a part of that is having projects like this come to downtown. As you know, hospitals are economic engines. They bring a lot of jobs. There’s a lot of economic activity associated with it,” Robinson said.

Several city and local leaders also attended Wednesday’s ceremony.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty was one of them and highlighted that Kaiser Permanente is the largest private employer in the city of Sacramento.

While Wednesday marked a major construction milestone, significant work remains before the facility opens.

Kaiser says it expects to begin work on the third building at the Railyards campus as early as next month.

The full medical center is expected to open in 2029, just after the projected 2028 openings of the new Sacramento Republic FC soccer stadium and live music venue.
