An 18-year-old Cal State Fullerton student died on Sunday from what officials assume to be an alcohol-related death following the preliminary investigation.

Anthony Blas was dropped off at the St. Jude Medical Center unresponsive. The Fullerton Police Department said that they responded to a service in the hospital at 12:07 a.m., where Blas died.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, alcohol consumption appears to have been a contributing factor in the male’s death,” Fullerton PD Sgt. Ryan O’Neil wrote in an email to the Daily Titan. “At this time, there is no evidence to suggest foul play. The investigation remains active and ongoing.”

O’Neil said that the official cause of death will be determined by the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Division. The autopsy was scheduled for this morning.

City police’s  calls for service report shows that at around 12:30 a.m., they investigated a crime scene at 2100 Block Teri Pl. related to the same incident. The CSUF Police Department’s crime log shows that at 1:17 a.m., they were in the same location, taking an investigation report. City police confirmed that both agencies were investigating the same case.

CSUF PD has denied to comment on the incident, stating that Fullerton PD is responsible for off-campus service calls. 

“Cal State Fullerton is aware of the death of a student that occurred over the weekend at an off-campus residence. Our hearts are with the student’s family and the campus community during this incredibly difficult time,” the university wrote in a statement to the Daily Titan. “The university is providing support to students, including counseling through Counseling and Psychological Services, and is reaching out to those who may be affected. This is an ongoing investigation and any further inquiries about the incident should be deferred to the Fullerton Police Department.”
