FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Medical students are learning what it takes to respond to outdoor emergencies.
UCSF Fresno is hosting its Wilderness Medicine Training.
This is offered to fourth-year medical students as they learn about rescues and life-saving devices like tourniquets.
Staff say it’s important to teach these skills that will help students manage stressful situations they may encounter outside.
”They’re not only life-saving in terms of the procedures that they are learning,” says Michelle Storkan, M.D. “For example, tourniquets, splinting, so kind of medical emergencies in the wilderness constitute an immediate evacuation. How to call for an evacuation when you’re far away, what resources might be at your disposal in coordination with EMS emergency medical services.”
Next week, students will take their training outside of the classroom as they head to Yosemite National Park.
