Volunteers clean historic military planes at California aerospace museum

SAFE Credit Union employees and members of their resource group, Veterans and Loved Ones Resources (VALOR), gathered at the Aerospace Museum of California at McClellan Airport to wash vintage military airplanes.

MCCLELLAN PARK, Calif. —

SAFE Credit Union employees and members of their resource group, Veterans and Loved Ones Resources (VALOR), gathered at the Aerospace Museum of California at McClellan Airport to wash vintage military airplanes.

VALOR members said the event was a valuable opportunity to introduce new generations to military history on a local level.

More than 30 SAFE employees and VALOR volunteers participated, cleaning 16 aircraft dating from World War II to the Gulf War. Organizers noted this was more than double the number of planes washed during the previous year.

Volunteers completed the task in just over an hour, washing the planes from nose to tail.

Tom Jones, president of the Aerospace Museum of California, highlighted the importance of community involvement in supporting the museum.

“It’s a 501(c)(3) nonprofit,” Jones said. “It doesn’t get a lot of government funding from anybody. So, to have the help of the community and taking care of this and making it shine for everybody – it’s a great experience.”

VALOR supports former and current military members and their families in the Sacramento area. Members said the event allowed them to give back to their community.
