BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — An elderly woman was rescued after a house fire in east Bakersfield Thursday night.
The Kern County Fire Department said on Thursday, September 17, at around 9:51 p.m., firefighters were called to a house fire in the 1300 block of Ralston Street.
They were assisted by the Bakersfield Fire Department.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the home.
According to the fire department, neighbors told them that an elderly woman was still trapped inside.
Locked gates and a locked front door blocked access to the house, so firefighters said they used specialized tools to get inside.
Crews entered the smoke-filled home and began searching for the woman while other firefighters worked to control the fire.
The woman was found unconscious inside the home and carried to the front yard. No one else was inside.
Firefighters immediately began lifesaving treatment and provided oxygen. KCFD said she began breathing and regained consciousness before being taken to Kern Medical.
The rescue was completed about two minutes after the incident commander arrived and eight minutes after the initial dispatch.
Crews continued to extinguish the fire, which was found in a rear bedroom.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
