LAKE ORION, Mich. – A 17-year-old student was taken into custody after an Oakland County Sheriff’s Office school resource officer recovered a loaded BB gun from the student’s backpack at Lake Orion High School, police said.
The incident occurred on Friday (Sept. 18) as police were notified at about 8:24 p.m. of a possible handgun on campus, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Police said the school’s resource officer was notified immediately and identified the classroom where the student was located.
Officials said the officer removed the student from the classroom without incident and secured the backpack.
Police said the recovered weapon was a loaded .177-caliber revolver-style BB gun.
Sheriff Michael Bouchard said the black metal BB gun closely resembled an actual handgun.
Bouchard said the incident underscores the importance of reporting potential threats at schools immediately.
The student, a 17-year-old girl from Pontiac, was taken into custody and transported to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Orion Township Substation.
Police said the girl was later transported to Oakland County Children’s Village after a juvenile court referee authorized her to stay there.
Officials secured the BB gun as evidence.
The case is being submitted to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for review of potential charges, including possession of a pneumatic gun in a weapon-free school zone and carrying a pneumatic gun with intent to use it unlawfully against another person.
The incident remains under investigation.
