OBITUARY
Richard James Brown, beloved Husband, Uncle, Teacher and Boat Captain, passed away from pancreatic cancer. He will be remembered for his innovative teaching methods for 38 years, mostly at Point Loma HS. Students will remember “Animal Farm” simulations and “1984.” He championed teacher’s rights as a stalwart leader of their union. Richard captained yachts in Lake Tahoe, and sailing charters in San Diego.
Born and raised in Point Loma, he honored his father’s Portuguese fisherman’s heritage and he carried his mother’s devotion to God and family. He will by missed by many including his SDSU friends, nieces; Lisa Rivera, Christina Serafine, nephew Richard Hodges, his dear wife of 25 years, Christa Thurber, and her family. Memorial will be at Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church, 11:00AM on Sat. Oct.10, 2026.
