SAN JOSE— In Cal’s final tune-up game before ACC play, the Golden Bears (9-1) took on the San Jose State Spartans (5-4) in the Battle of NorCal. Following a five-set victory over Sacramento State on Saturday, the Golden Bears came on strong to open the match, winning 26-24.
It certainly wasn’t an easy victory by any means, as the opening set saw 12 ties and six lead changes, which ended up being the most for both categories throughout the day. The Spartans answered with a victory of their own in the second set, knocking off the Bears 25-23. While this could have swung the momentum in their favor, it seemed to be the stick that poked the Bears.
Cal went on to outscore San Jose State 50-25 in the final two sets, holding the Spartans to just nine points in the fourth. The victory adds to what has been a tremendous start for Cal, as they have already surpassed last year’s win total, with today’s victory marking their 10th of the year.
