Andrew Tate drove the U-1 BWR Racing to victory in the Bill Muncey Cup Unlimited Hydroplane Championship on West Mission Bay Sunday afternoon — also coming from behind in the season points race to claim a third straight season championship.

Tate paced qualifying Friday afternoon with a lap at 166.066 mph in the U-1 BMR Racing. He then had two wins and a second-place finish in the heats Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning before winning Sunday afternoon’s Bill Muncey Cup grand finale to Bayfair San Diego to clinch the season points championship.

Tate averaged 152.956 mph in the five-lap Bill Muncey Cup for his second win of the season and 14th of his career.

The driver’s championship is the fourth for the fourth-generation boat racer from Michigan – making Andrew and father Mark two of seven drivers in Unlimited Hydroplane history to have four season championships. Mark and Andrew Tate are the only father-son tandem to have four season titles and a Gold Cup victory to their credit.

”That means a lot to me,” said Andrew Tate. “It has special to have my dad here today. My parents have been on this journey with me for a long time. Today was a special day.”

Tate positioned the turbine-powered U-1 inside, took the lead coming out of the first turn and was never headed. “It went very well,” said Tate. “Everything about the weekend unfolded according to plan.

Former Bayfair champion J. Michael Kelly (U-00 Maverick) finished second in Sunday’s championship heat with an average speed of 147.331 mph. Corey Peabody (U-3 Tahoe Miss) was third at 147.287 mph and Jamie Nilsen (U-11 Miss Fav-R-Pac) was fourth at 127.999 mph. Jimmy Shane (U-27 Miss Apollo) and Dylan Runne (U-40 Bucket List Racing) were both disqualified for fuel flow infractions.

Shane opened the weekend with a 180-point lead on Tate. But Tate moved into the lead Sunday morning and finished with a 525-point lead over Shane thanks mainly to Sunday’s disqualification. Peabody finished third in the final standings.
