Oakland Airport is getting low marks from travelers who say the biggest problem is simple: it’s boring. In JD Power’s North American Airport Satisfaction Study, Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport ranked 20th out of 24 airports in the large airport category. It scored 628 on a 1,000-point scale, below the average of 657, even with a 10-point gain from last year’s study. JD Power said aging facilities and lower-rated food, beverage and retail offerings helped drag down the score. The airport has tried to improve its food options over the last seven years with a hyperlocal approach. Additions include Southie, District, Tiki Bar Trader Vic’s, Farley’s Cafe and Oaklandish Coffee Collective. Travelers also described the airport as efficient, with BART access and a growing number of food and drink options. The Port of Oakland upgraded Terminal 1 with $10 million in improvements, and by 2028 all restroom facilities should be remodeled. A new terminal with 16 gates and expanded international arrivals facilities is still in planning.
