A professor from the University of Toronto will explore the question “Is Capitalism the Enemy of Nature?” in late October as part of an Oakland University lecture series.
The presentation by Joseph Heath, a professor in the philosophy department at Toronto, is presented by the OU Richard J. Burke Lecture in Philosophy, Religion, and Society.
It will be at 7:00 p.m. on Oct. 29 at the OU Center banquet room A.
Arguments have been made that environmental problems such as climate change cannot be resolved within the framework of a market economy. This argument features centrally in the claims of eco-socialists.
This is often based on the claim that capitalism requires growth within a finite ecosystem so the economic system must at some point break down.
This presentation will assess the merits of this claim.
Heath is the author of several award-winning books, including “Enlightenment 2.0” (2014), and “The Machinery of Government” (2020).
The lecture is open to the public and no registration is needed.
