With the Kern County Fair opening Wednesday, crews are transforming the Bakersfield fairgrounds into the midway—assembling rides and preparing food stands for the annual event.
Carnival workers are putting rides together while vendors move into buildings and prepare to serve fair favorites.

“We are in the home stretch. We are ready to open in just a few short days,” said Chelsey Roberts, marketing director for the Kern County Fair. “We have everyone out here, whether it is vendors coming into the buildings or the carnival setting up.”
Much of the work happens before the lights come on and the midway fills up. Many rides are still in their trucks as crews continue setup.

Fair officials said the 12-day event brings together rides, food, entertainment and traditions that Kern County families look forward to each year.
“We have the biggest event in the community, and we are ready for 12 days of it,” Roberts said. “It’s so cool to see everything coming together and to see all 400,000 guests who come out over the 12 days to make memories. It is the place to be in September in Kern County.”
Organizers said this year’s fair includes new food vendors, new attractions and 12 nights of free concerts.
