How an Oakland County 3-year-old’s FaceTime call saved his mom’s life

  • October 14, 2025

A 3-year-old boy from Pontiac is being recognized for saving his mom’s life after he used her phone to call for help when she was having a medical emergency.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard held a news conference on Tuesday, Oct. 14, to recognize Cody for his quick thinking.

His mother, Shantell Woods, said that she had just finished cooking and felt a little dizzy, so she sat on the couch.

Woods said after about 10 minutes, she could “feel her epilepsy coming on” and said, “Please don’t let this happen.” (You can watch Shantell Woods’ full interview at the bottom of this article.)

As soon as she said that, Woods said she “was out.”

At the time, Cody was upstairs watching TV, but had come down and tried to wake her up.

“He was trying to get me up, ‘mommy, mommy, are you okay? Mommy.’ I’m hearing him, but I couldn’t respond,” Woods recalled.

Cody then went to the door and called out a family friend’s name for help, but after getting no response, he grabbed his mother’s phone.

“So, he grabbed my phone, took my glasses off, opened my phone,” Woods said. He tried to call 911, but I guess they couldn’t understand, so he hung up.”

After that, he called their family friend, said ‘Help mommy,” and she rushed over to help.

When asked if she’s ever taught him how to do this before, Woods said she did, and he and his older sister know what to do in the event of an emergency.

“I’m very proud of him,” Woods said. “Very proud. Because he saved my life. I could have been gone.”

“He’s my superhero,” Woods said.

During the new conference, Bouchard recognized Cody’s actions with a few gifts, including a gift certificate for Chuck E. Cheese so Cody can throw a party for his upcoming birthday, some sheriff’s office swag, an ice cream cake and more.

Bouchard also used this as a reminder about the importance of parents teaching their children how to respond during emergencies.
