SAN JOSE — A rideshare driver was arrested on Sept. 13 for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor boy who was riding in his vehicle, authorities said on Tuesday.
Anuj Kumar, a 32-year-old resident of Foster City, was arrested in his city of residence and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of sexually assaulting a minor.
Authorities were called just after 10:30 p.m. Sept. 12 for a report of a sexual assault against a minor that had occurred earlier in the day, according to a news release from the San Jose Police Department. The incident occurred on the 100 block of Paseo de San Antonio.
In their investigation, police found that the juvenile boy had been riding in the rideshare when he was allegedly sexually assaulted by Kumar, authorities said. They later identified the suspect vehicle and suspect.
The driver was working for Uber at the time of the incident, police added. For years, rideshare companies have been facing alleged incidents of sexual assault by contractors working for them, both locally and nationally, and allegations that they have not taken sufficient steps to ensure rider safety.
