Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis ran into comedian Dave Chappelle at a San Francisco Greek restaurant, producing a brief celebrity-meets-politician encounter that was captured on video.

Mitsotakis and Chappelle met at Kokkari, the Hellenic restaurant in the city’s Financial District, on Monday, Sept. 21, Paul Kirby, managing partner at Kokkari, confirmed with the Chronicle, noting Chappelle “stops by whenever he’s in town.”

The meeting came as Mitsotakis was in the Bay Area for a series of technology and business appearances and while Chappelle is in San Francisco for two stand-up performances at the Punch Line Comedy Club. His stint began with a show Monday and concludes Tuesday, Sept. 22.

Greek news outlet Iefimerida posted video of their exchange, during which Mitsotakis asked Chappelle about his relationship with his audience.

“I got our people’s hearts,” Chappelle said, according to the clip.

Mitsotakis then asked whether Chappelle liked the restaurant and described its food as authentic Greek cooking.

“It’s an honor to meet you, sir, in the best Greek restaurant,” he replied.

Mitsotakis was in San Francisco for a two-day Bay Area visit that included meetings with technology executives and researchers and an Endeavor Greece event focused on artificial intelligence. His official schedule also included a meeting Tuesday with San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and a visit to Stanford University’s Hoover Institution.

For Chappelle, Monday’s restaurant appearance came just hours before his scheduled performances at the Punch Line, where he was listed for shows at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. both nights.

The San Francisco stop is part of Chappelle’s ongoing touring schedule. He has made several Bay Area appearances over the years, including a Chase Center performance earlier this year.
