OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – A beloved Oak Park High School math teacher was killed in a crash after police said a 19-year-old driver disregarded a traffic signal and was intoxicated.
As an Uber driver, Dwayne Harvey, 59, was driving a Buick Enclave with a passenger near 8 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway on Thursday (Sept. 17) when another vehicle struck his SUV, police said.
Police identified the other driver as 19-year-old Tracey Sutton.
Sutton has been arraigned on two charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, causing injury and death.
Harvey was taken to a hospital after first responders had to cut him from the wreckage.
He was later pronounced dead, police said.
Harvey’s passenger was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and was also taken to a hospital.
The passenger’s condition was not immediately available.
Harvey was a longtime educator at Oak Park High School and was remembered by colleagues as a devoted teacher, husband, father, grandfather and mentor.
Oak Park Schools described Harvey in a Facebook post as a beloved educator who made a lasting impact on students and colleagues.
The district said he was known for his warm smile, positive spirit, and genuine connections with students.
Harvey was a huge Prince fan. He also loved the color purple.
The school planned to honor Harvey by encouraging students and staff to wear purple, listen to some of his favorite music, and celebrate the joy he brought to the school community.
The crash remains under investigation.
