Re “La Jolla Cove access debate gets heated” (Sept. 19): Keeping the cove open for swimmers and divers is important for many people. I swim all year long there. We are not the problem for the sea lions. We can share the cove with sea lions and have now for years.

The cove is unique because it provides a safe place to get in the water. It is mostly protected from surf, we don’t have rip currents there, the area outside the cove is marked by buoys that keep boats and kayaks away, and there are lifeguards. There is no other place like it in San Diego.

It is unfortunate that sea lions have adopted this place. It will be difficult to protect them even if the cove is closed. Unless 24/7 security is provided, nothing will stop nighttime activity there. The recent incident of a sea lion being kicked happened at night and did not happen in the cove.
