Sacramento State’s KSSU Radio celebrates milestone
Award-winning campus radio marks 35 years of broadcasting
Sacramento State University’s award-winning, student-run radio station celebrated a major milestone Thursday.
KSSU Radio marked its 35th year on the air with an all-day event that welcomed alumni, students and university staff to the campus station for an anniversary gathering.
The event included a panel discussion with station managers from over the years, a display of station memorabilia and an awards banquet.
In a statement about the 35th anniversary event, founder Jim Bolt wrote:
“In 1989, a dedicated group of 50 students labored for two years, working through red tape and university bureaucracy, to get the station up and running. The students started broadcasting on cable FM (through Access Sacramento Cable) 10 months before KSSU studios went live in 1991. The students ended up securing $150K in startup costs and a $30K operating budget.”
During its 35 years, roughly 3,500 students have called the radio station home, according to its founders.
The nationally-recognized college radio station started streaming online in 2005, adhering to its mission “to provide students with hands-on opportunities to learn about radio broadcasting, event planning, marketing, etc.”
The station’s founders adding, “KSSU is a creative space dedicated to free speech and expression.”
