FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A 23-year-old man is facing a murder charge after Fresno County sheriff’s deputies say he fatally stabbed his younger brother inside the family’s home.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jose Miranda Jr. in connection with the death of his 19-year-old brother, Diego Miranda, following a stabbing Monday morning near Saginaw and Pacific avenues, southeast of Selma.
“This is your family. You know you should be able to try and at least work things out with loved ones if there are problems,” said Fresno County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Tony Botti.
Deputies responded to the home after receiving reports of a violent incident and found Diego suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators have not identified a motive for the attack.
“The details as to what happened, any history between the brothers, that’s going to come out in the court proceedings,” Botti said.
According to detectives, the two brothers lived at the residence with their parents but were home alone when the stabbing occurred. Authorities say Jose Jr. remained at the scene and was taken into custody after deputies and detectives interviewed witnesses.
The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office has now filed a murder case against Jose Jr., though his first court appearance was delayed Thursday.
“We’ve got a solid case here. It’s always great, obviously, when the DA sees it the same way as us,” Botti said.
Sheriff’s officials said deputies had previously responded to the residence for other calls, but never for anything approaching the severity of this incident.
“This family, their world got turned upside down that day. Two people are no longer at that house. One’s never coming back, and the other one may not either, because they might spend the rest of their life in prison,” Botti said.
Jose Miranda Jr. remains in custody as the case moves through the court system. Investigators say additional details about the brothers’ relationship and the circumstances leading up to the stabbing are expected to emerge during future court proceedings.
