Tacos El Cabezon has closed its Fulton Street taqueria – but the restaurant says we haven’t seen the last of the popular tacos.

The taco shop announced on Instagram Tuesday that it had decided to close the brick-and-mortar restaurant at 1234 Fulton St. that opened in March.

The post said, in part: “After a lot of prayer, thought, and consideration, I’ve made the difficult decision to permanently close our Downtown Fresno restaurant. This isn’t goodbye. It’s a new beginning.”

The post went on to say that the business had purchased a new food trailer. It plans to get “back to our roots” by selling food via the taco truck. It did not say when.

Owner Armando Arias Jr. did not return a message seeking comment.

The landlord at the Fulton Street restaurant said the business was “behind almost two months in rent.” It wasn’t the first time rent was late, he added.

The estilo cachanilla (Mexicali style) tacos were influenced by Baja, California, where Arias spent summers as a kid. They made a splash in Fresno last year when he parked his taco truck at Shaw and Maroa avenues, drawing long lines of customers wanting the popular tacos.

After the truck was evicted from that location and plans for a McKinley taqueria never came to fruition, Tacos El Cabezo opened the downtown location.

The owner made headlines when he was reported missing in April, but he was later found safe.

Tacos El Cabezon isn’t the only restaurant closing. Several eateries in Fresno and Clovis have closed in recent months, hit with multiple challenges, including rising food costs, rents, wages, energy bills and customers who are pulling back on spending.

They include Figaro’s Mexican Grill, Hummus Republic, Great Wall Chinese Cuisine, Toshiko Ramen and Sushi Bar and more.
