A San Diego resident urges action for safety upgrades at a crash-prone intersection, frustrated by the city’s lack of response despite numerous pleas over six years.
SAN DIEGO — A San Diego resident, Jon Branshaw, claims he has witnessed numerous car crashes at the intersection of Division Street and Plaza Boulevard over the past six years. Frustrated by the lack of response from the city, Branshaw has filed between 15 and 20 “Get It Done” requests, seeking safety improvements such as a streetlight, a crosswalk, or a roundabout.

Despite reporting the issue repeatedly, including after an April 2025 incident where a minivan crashed into his front fence, causing $14,000 in damage and injuring the driver, Branshaw feels that nothing significant has been done. He stated, “I sent them a picture like hey this is another time I had an accident and now I have property damage on top of there was an injury and they failed to do anything about it.”
The only visible change has been the installation of larger stop signs, which Branshaw believes are insufficient. “How does that make you feel? Horrible, like they don’t care,” he said, expressing his deep frustration.
Branshaw’s plea for action coincides with a broader initiative called Safe Streets Without Borders, supported by local leaders and neighbors aiming to enhance safety on Division Street, a roadway divided between San Diego and National City.
In response to Branshaw’s continued advocacy, he expressed what he would say to city leaders: “Get off your butt and do something about it before somebody gets hurt or killed.” Meanwhile, the City of San Diego has acknowledged his requests and plans to review them for possible action.
