BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Last week, jurors heard grisly details and viewed chilling surveillance video that captured the screams of Yolanda Rojo as she was fatally stabbed in the east Bakersfield apartment where she lived with her two young children.
Trial resumes Monday in the trial of her alleged killer, Victor Farias Jr., the father of her children.
17 News is live blogging the proceedings.
The stabbing occurred on the night of March 25 at Shadow Ridge Apartments in the 7000 block of College Avenue.
One of Rojo’s daughters, then 6, told officers she witnessed Farias stab her mother. Another child, 4, also was home.
Fourteen stab wounds were found on Rojo’s body, according to testimony.
Footage from a surveillance camera outside the apartment captured screaming and banging noises, then shows the 6-year-old run outside followed by a man.
“Stop! Stop doing that!” she yells before heading back inside as the man flees. She’s then heard asking her mom if she’s OK.
The child and her younger sister ran to a neighbor’s home and 911 was called.
Farias was arrested hours later in Tehachapi. His car was involved in a crash on Highway 58 and found abandoned off the roadway, police said, and he was apprehended near a grocery store.
Farias is charged with first-degree murder, among other offenses.
