A well-known San Francisco pub owner spent the weekend in jail following an alleged dispute over a parking spot that escalated into a baseball bat attack and robbery at a neighboring shop in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood.

Cyril Hackett, owner of the Mad Dog in the Fog pub, was arrested after an incident Friday night at “Further,” a clothing store located a few doors down.

According to store employees, the altercation stemmed from a parking space dispute that occurred nine hours earlier, when Hackett and store worker Drew Wood both tried to claim the same spot in front of the shop and neither would back down for more than 10 minutes.

Cellphone video captured by a witness showed part of the initial parking confrontation. Later that evening, security camera video from the shop shows a man walking in with a bat and taking a swing.

“And just like swung it over his head and smashed our desk. Didn’t break anything, but hard enough to like ‘whoa what’s going on,'” said Drew Wood, a clothing shop worker. “And then he’s like holdin’ the bat like ‘don’t you ever disrespect me’ like Tony Soprano vibes.”

Wood, who knows Hackett as a neighborhood business owner, said the confrontation did not stop with the damaged desk. Security footage shows Hackett attempting to take merchandise from the store.

“And he was like, I’m taking these clothes too, and tried to take one of the clothing items off and leave with it,” Wood said. “That’s when I stood up and was like, well you can’t steal from us.”

Wood and a friend, Wolf, went after Hackett to retrieve the item. Wolf, a witness, stated that Hackett eventually tossed the stolen item away before resuming his attacks with the bat.

“We wasn’t wailing it. He was more or less just like, hacking down, he hit Drew in the knee and Drew started limping, told me to call 911,” Wolf said.

Because Hackett was initially booked on a felony charge of assault with a weapon, he remained in custody over the weekend pending formal charging decisions by the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.

“He is in custody at this point, but again, we’re reviewing it and, you will know tomorrow when we file charges,” said San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins.

Reflecting on the fallout, Wood noted that the entire ordeal could have been avoided.

“I don’t really wish harm or anything bad to happen to him,” Wood said. “I just hope he feels like he understands that was dumb.”

Representatives for the Mad Dog in the Fog declined to comment on Hackett’s behalf when contacted.
