As fall approaches and we move indoors, it is a great time to try new experiences, connect with others in a comfortable environment, and make time for the things that interest you. The John D. Spreckels Center invites adults to explore upcoming activities, classes and special events.

In October, the center is celebrating senior wellness with two special events. On Tuesday, October 6, from 2-4 p.m., head over for the Senior Social, a luau-themed afternoon of fun and a resource fair. Enjoy bingo, live music, health and wellness screenings, and more, all at no cost.

Continuing the focus on senior wellness, Smart Aging: What You Need to Know Now will offer important information for anyone 50 and better. The free educational forum, presented with the County of San Diego and its community partners, takes place Friday, October 23, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Ever wondered how you could help a neighbor who is having difficulty caring for themselves? Learn what resources are available, from elder law to Alzheimer’s awareness.

Learn a new card game. Texas Hold’em for Beginners, beginning Tuesday, October 6, from 5-6 p.m., introduces participants to the popular card game in a relaxed setting. The only money exchanged is the $25 registration fee for residents.

Technology training is back, and it doesn’t have to be intimidating. Smartphone Hardware Basics, Wednesday, October 21, from 10-11 a.m., is the first in a monthly, multi-part series at the center. The one-hour class will help participants become more familiar with their smartphones and understand their devices’ features and functions. At just $5 for Coronado residents, it is an affordable way to build confidence with a device used every day.

Music lovers can enjoy Timeless Tunes, a free one-hour monthly music appreciation class featuring a different theme each month. Through music, videos, trivia and stories, participants can revisit familiar favorites and discover something new. Octobers theme is Country Roads.

If creativity is your jam, local artist Cathy Deibler teaches Ink Illustration Workshop Series, a beginner-friendly class with step-by-step instruction in drawing and watercolor painting. In this four-part series, attendees will create four cards featuring coastal and fall themes. The first class begins Thursday, October 1, from 5:45-7 p.m. Pricing starts at $150 for residents.

Art enthusiasts can also celebrate the San Diego Museum of Art Centennial with a free presentation on Tuesday, October 13, from 2-3 p.m. The program will highlight the museum’s centennial exhibition and include an art workshop with all supplies provided.

Halloween lovers, are you ready to get creative? Sign up for 3-D Pumpkin Carving Workshop on Thursday, October 29, from 4-7 p.m. This three-hour workshop is led by a professional artist and pumpkin carver featured on Food Network and Disney+. Learn techniques for transforming a pumpkin into a three-dimensional work of art and take those skills home for years to come. Pricing begins at $95 for residents.

Another offering is Fall Flavors cooking class on Friday, October 9, from 2-3 p.m. With hands-on instruction and a meal to share, this is a fun way to spend an afternoon. Pricing varies based on resident and senior discounts.

Programs are open to adults, with many offerings designed especially for adults 50 and better.
