Local K-pop fans received some bad news on Monday – Korean superstar Taemin will no longer be performing in the Bay Area, citing visa issues for his production and touring staff.

Taemin was scheduled to play at the SAP Center in San Jose on Oct. 12 to kick off a North American tour that also includes stops in Los Angeles; Las Vegas; Chicago; Newark, New Jersey; and Grand Prairie, Texas. The entire North American tour has been postponed.

“Given the continued uncertainty surrounding the participation of essential personnel, we determined that proceeding with the tour as scheduled would carry significant operational and production risks,” Taemin shared in a post on X.

Taemin, 33, began his musical career as part of the boy band Shinee when he was 14 while acting and voicing characters in animated films. In 2014, he made his solo debut and released his first studio album “Press It” in 2016, with a single co-produced by Bruno Mars. His star has continued to rise internationally, culminating with a performance at Coachella in 2026, the first ever by a male Korean solo artist. His single “Move” has around 138 million Spotify streams.

Visa issues for international artists have become more common in the past few years. Recently, Swedish death metal stalwart Hypocrisy canceled its Aug. 21 date at the Warfield in San Francisco. British rock band Enter Shikari also canceled an Oct. 6 concert at the Independent. Last year, FKA twigs called off a highly anticipated show at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, as did folk singer Yusuf/Cat Stevens with his appearance at the Masonic.

Shifts in the visa process in recent years have made touring the U.S. more costly, requiring more advanced planning. Visa prices jumped sharply in April 2024, rising from $460 to $1,615 for groups under 25 people and to $1,655 for larger crews. The approval time has also risen from an average of three months to eight, the Associated Press reported. Expediting the visa also now costs $2,805, up from $2,500.

The Taemin tour is currently in the process of being rescheduled, but no future dates have been announced. Refunds will be issued “through the original point of purchase,” according to Taemin’s post on X.
