The discovery of a suspicious package prompted the temporary closure of the Otay Mesa port of entry for vehicles and pedestrians crossing the U.S.-Mexico border on Wednesday morning but officials had it reopened more than an hour later, officials said.

San Diego police spokesperson Lt. Cesar Jimenez said a package was found by federal authorities and that, out of an abundance of caution, traffic was being diverted while authorities investigated the issue. The closure affected northbound and southbound traffic. Police first posted about the closure on X shortly before 9:30 a.m.

Shortly after 11 a.m., police officials announced the crossing had “fully reopened.”

Customs and Border Protection officials said the closure was prompted by “a security matter involving a suspicious electronic device.”

“Law enforcement personnel have thoroughly investigated and cleared the scene,” the agency said in a statement. “All lanes are now fully open to the public.”

No further details were immediately available.
