Cal women’s soccer had a clean sweep this weekend, defeating Boston College 1-0, and Fresno State 2-0.
The Eagles hosted the Bears on Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Newton Campus Lacrosse & Soccer Field in Chestnut, Massachusetts, where the Bears claimed their first ACC win of the season.
Assisted by senior Miriam Hils, senior Reese Doherty scored her second goal of the season against Boston College, which clinched the win for the Bears in the 35th minute. Doherty is having a strong start to her senior season as she’s starting in every game and playing in the majority of each. She has also scored the last two of her six shots.
The Bears and the Eagles had an overall even game. Boston College put up 13 shots and Cal followed with 12, while both teams had four shots on goal and fouls were tied at 11. Aside from Doherty’s goal, the stats were almost even.
The Eagles came out strong offensively, taking seven of their 13 shots in the first half. Their energy became scarce in the second half, and they only put up five shots and were unable to respond to Cal’s victory goal. Part of Boston College’s inability to successfully score against Cal is due to redshirt junior Alyssa Savig, who had four saves for the Bears.
The Eagles now hold an 8-2-1 overall record and a 1-2-1 conference record ahead of their next ACC game against Southern Methodist University on Oct. 2.
Cal ended the weekend with a big win at its home field, Edwards Stadium, against the Bulldogs on Sunday, Sept. 27.
The first goal was scored in the 46th minute, just as the second half began, from freshman Jada Faison, who was assisted by sophomore Elhom Khursand. This goal kick-started the second half for the Bears, and it marked Faison’s first goal as a Bear and Khursand’s fifth assist.
The second goal came from senior Lizzie Vranesh in the 69th minute, who was assisted by redshirt sophomore Emilia Eriksen. This was Vranesh’s first goal of the season, and the latest since her freshman season in a game against Oregon almost three years ago.
The Bears went two for two in the second half of the game, converting both of their shots into goals. Cal took seven shots in the first half, but only found the back of the net in the second half of the game, in which the Bears dominated offensively with four shots on goal to the Bulldogs’ one.
Cal’s win marked the end of non-conference play, and bumped the team up to a 4-4-4 overall record and a 1-2-1 conference record as the Bears hit the middle point of their conference games.
Coming off a strong weekend, the Bears are headed to Durham, North Carolina, looking for their second ACC win of the season. They are set to face No. 4 Duke on Oct. 3 at 2 p.m.
