A 10-year-old child has died after a head-on crash near Rancho Cordova that also left two other people seriously injured Wednesday morning, CHP said.

Officers said the child was a student at Mather Heights Elementary School. CHP had initially said the 10-year-old was hospitalized in critical condition after the crash.

The crash happened just after 8 a.m. on Mather Boulevard south of Douglas Road.

According to CHP, a gray Hyundai Elantra was traveling south when it crossed the double yellow lines and struck a Chevrolet Equinox head-on in the northbound lane.

Investigators said the Hyundai may have been trying to pass a slower-moving vehicle, though CHP has not confirmed that as the cause.

Three people were taken to hospitals with major injuries. Two were initially listed in critical condition, including the child who later died.

Mather Boulevard was closed in both directions between Douglas and Alert roads for several hours before reopening shortly after 10 a.m.
