Kaiser Permanente, one of the nation’s largest private, not-for-profit health care organizations, will be laying off 147 workers including 12 in Oakland, and 22 in Pleasanton, according to the latest federal government Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filings. The rest of the affected workers are based at Kaiser locations in Southern California.
According to the filings, the Oakland employees affected aren’t frontline service providers. Eleven of them work at 1 Kaiser Plaza, which serves as the national headquarters for Kaiser Permanente Corporate offices; one other works out of the Kaiser Permanente administrative offices on Harrison Street. The layoffs are permanent, according to the filings, and are effective as of Nov. 20.
In an emailed statement to The Oaklandside, a spokesperson for Kaiser Permanente said,“Kaiser Permanente continually evaluates how we organize our work and deploy resources to help ensure high-quality care remains affordable and accessible for our members and patients. We recently notified 147 employees in a number of business and administrative functions that their positions will be eliminated. These positions do not provide direct patient care.”
“We are supporting affected employees as they explore other opportunities within Kaiser Permanente and, where appropriate, providing severance, career support, and outplacement services,” the spokesperson continued. “These changes will not affect the quality of care or service we provide to our members and patients.”
In September of last year, the giant health provider laid off more than 200 positions across 15 hospitals and clinics that also affected Oakland workers in an effort to “rebalance resources,” a spokesperson told The San Francisco Chronicle at the time.
According to Kaiser Permanente, the company has around 180,000 employees in the state of California, around 130,000 of whom are unionized.
