(FOX40.COM) — An alleged drunk driver accused of fatally hitting a bicyclist in Sacramento and driving away has been convicted, officials announced Thursday.
According to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, Vincente Jose Perez, of West Sacramento, was convicted of second-degree murder and hit-and-run causing death.
On the night of Oct. 12, 2024, Perez was driving his vehicle near Marysville Boulevard and Main Avenue in north Sacramento while under the influence of alcohol when he struck and killed Jordan Rodriguez, who was riding a bicycle. Perez drove away, but lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a ditch, the attorney’s office said.
Police found the car with “significant damage” and “human biological matter” on the driver side, roof and trunk. Upon speaking to Perez, officers saw multiple signs of intoxication, such as the odor of alcohol from his person, red and watery eyes and slurred speech.
Perez blew over the 0.08% legal blood alcohol concentration limit twice during field sobriety tests. His blood draw yielded a 0.142% blood alcohol level along with traces of THC, officials said.
Perez, a repeat DUI offender, had been convicted previously. He now faces a maximum sentence of 19 years to life in prison. His sentencing is set for Oct. 23.
