FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — You can either go big or grab a bite on a budget at Don Tacha Taqueria on Blackstone and McKenzie in Central Fresno.

“Kind of born and raised in the whole restaurant scene, so we opened up this and said we want to keep it small,” said co-owner Jose Gonzales Jr. “We want to keep it casual, but we also want to keep it authentic.”

Bring your appetite to take on the fully loaded asada fries made with thinly cut potatoes.

“They actually cut their papitas – their potatoes kind of like Lay’s style, and they fry them fresh,” says customer David Mendoza. “You’re not going to get that anywhere.”

Mendoza added that it helps their food is affordable.

It’s a place where you can still buy dollar tacos.

“We do have ground beef – carne molida, chicharron – which is pork skin marinated in a red sauce, so it’s a little spicy for my spicy lovers,” Gonzales said. “Then we have veggie tacos.”

Don Tacha is the nickname of Gonzales’ father, Jose Sr., who, at 72, is finally retiring.

“It’s exciting, but it’s also a sad moment,” Gonzales Jr. said. “We’ve been doing this so long together, and he’s shown me so much.”

Don Tacha Taqueria opened in Fresno’s Lowell District in 2015.

“They’re not just a restaurant in the community, but they have become part of the community voice,” Mendoza said.

Gonzales said they’re known for their sirloin steak arrachera, which they cook over cherry or plum firewood.

“They love that we put beans on tacos,” he said. “You don’t really find that in too many places. It’s very authentic.”

We also got a try of their chicken quesadilla.

“I appreciate you guys spotlighting us,” Gonzales said. “It’s a great community. I’m so proud and happy to be part of Lowell, but we do want to reach a bigger audience to let all of Fresno know.”
