FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A new investment in local water infrastructure is now starting.

Officials broke ground Thursday on phase one of the Friant-Kern Canal pump station replacement project.

This canal carries water from Millerton Lake across South Valley counties.

Earlier this year, the Department of the Interior announced $200 million for the waterway through the One Big Beautiful Bill.

During phase one, five aging pump stations are being replaced.

Phase two will modernize 13 stations that move water through the Friant Division.
