The Long Beach City College community came together on Thursday evening, Oct. 1, to honor the legacy of former Mayor Beverly O’Neill, whose contributions over the years have spanned education, civic leadership and community service.
While O’Neill have frequently been celebrated for her efforts to improve the city of Long Beach as a whole, her work as a community leader began at LBCC. She served and led LBCC for more than 30 years as a faculty member, administrator and, ultimately, superintendent-president.
O’Neill’s work expanded student access, strengthened academic programs and elevated LBCC’s reputation in the region, according to city and college officials.
In recognition of her contributions, the city and LBCC took steps to rename East Lew Davis Street — from Clark Avenue to Facility Avenue — to “Beverly O’Neill Way” last month. The street is near LBCC’s Liberal Arts Campus and is where the college’s new student housing project is being built, college officials said.
Thursday’s event included dedicating “Beverly O’Neill Way,” as well as a dinner and a special opportunity for guests to bid on select pieces from O’Neill’s collection. Proceeds from the event will also benefit the Beverly O’Neill Scholarship with the LBCC Foundation.
