A 31-year-old Pontiac woman is facing a felony charge for allegedly pouring boiling water on a 15-year-old girl during a physical altercation Sunday evening, leaving the teen hospitalized with severe burns, officials said.

Shanell Lakeisha Cohen was arrested on Oct. 1 after she reportedly admitted to Oakland County Sheriff’s detectives that she poured the hot water on the girl. Cohen had come to the sheriff’s substation in Pontiac for an interview with detectives and was subsequently taken into custody and transported to jail, the sheriff’s office said. She was arraigned that day on one count of one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder or by strangulation, and bond was set at $75,000 with a 10% provision. That allows her to be released from jail if she posts $7,500 in cash or surety.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the area of Leonard Lane at approximately 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28, on a report of a large group of people fighting. Deputies found approximately 50 to 100 people gathered in a parking lot there, and an investigation determined the teen girl and Cohen had become involved in a physical altercation, the sheriff’s office said. Cohen then went inside her home, removed a pot of boiling water from the stove and brought it outside where the teen was in a physical altercation with other people, the sheriff’s office said. Detectives determined Cohen approached the teen and poured the water of her back, the sheriff’s office said.

The teen suffered extensive burns and was transported by ambulance to McLaren Oakland Hospital, then subsequently transferred to Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. She has third-degree burns to her neck and the majority of her back, the sheriff’s office said.

“We have another sad example of a verbal dispute, escalating into dangerous physical violence. Individuals that do so will be held to account,” Sheriff Mike Bouchard stated in a news release.

Cohen’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 13 for a probable cause conference before 50th District Judge Ronda Gross.
