BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Kern County Fair partnered with the Kern County Superintendent of Schools to host their special persons event, giving those with special needs a chance to enjoy the fair in a less crowded environment.

This year, we have about thirty-five hundred students who are coming to the fair on a morning when there are a little bit fewer lights and sounds and stuff like that, so that all of our students can enjoy a little time at the fair,” said Justin Thompson, from the Kern County Superintendent of Schools.

The Kern County Fair is a way for students to not only get out in the community, but also a way to enjoy all the fair has to offer.

“It’s a day that all the students in school look forward to – coming out here. We love to get our students out into the community to experience things with the community,” said Thompson.

And the Superintendent of Schools teamed up with the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Unit to help feed the students.

“We’re cooking five thousand hot dogs today for all the special needs kids in the Kern County Superintendent of Schools,” said Darron Hobson, of the Kern County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse.

A tradition that the Sheriff’s Posse says has been growing for 67 years.

“Back in the beginning, our members would go to the kids’ houses and pick them up and bring them to the fair and then feed them and then take them home. And over these 67 years, it’s grown so much that now we put on this event and serve five thousand hot dogs,” said Hobson.
