The Bull Fire grew to about 1,100 acres Friday near the Northern California-Nevada border, prompting evacuations in backcountry areas near Verdi.
The fire was burning above Verdi, just east of Dog Valley. The community sits only a few miles east of the California state line.
Evacuation warnings remained in effect for parts of the Verdi and Sierra Canyon areas.
Truckee Meadows Fire said retardant lines had been placed along the fire’s southern flank. The head of the fire was burning into the footprint of the inactive Hawk Fire.
Flames were spreading at a moderate rate north of Dog Valley.
Officials asked people to stay off trails and avoid the area.
A briefing on the fire was scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
