LOS ANGELES — The Coast Guard, California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response, Huntington Beach Fire Department, and Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol responded to an oil spill in Huntington Beach Harbor on Wednesday.
Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach command center watchstanders received a call at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday reporting a 40-foot pleasure craft that caught fire.
Huntington Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and began firefighting efforts using extinguishing foam; however, the vessel subsequently sank at approximately 4 p.m. within its slip.
Due to an active discharge of diesel fuel, the Huntington Beach Fire Department personnel deployed containment boom and absorbent pads to contain the spill.
The Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach Federal On-Scene Coordinator activated the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund and contracted an Oil Spill Response Organization to begin oil spill removal activities.
The vessel’s maximum potential fuel and oil capacity is estimated at 520 gallons. The actual amount discharged and the cause of the fire remain under investigation.
There have been no reports of injuries or wildlife impacts. Cleanup efforts are ongoing.
