MAR VISTA, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Police continued their search Friday for the passenger accused of shooting and killing a Culver City bus driver following a dispute in Mar Vista.
It comes as Culver City decided to suspend all bus service through the weekend following the deadly incident.
The shooting was reported around 5:15 p.m. at the intersection of Centinela and Mitchell avenues.
Two witnesses on the bus told police they suspected the male passenger was intoxicated when he began arguing with the driver over a missed stop.
LAPD Capt. Eric Eppolito said the suspect then pulled out a gun and shot the bus driver.
The driver was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators said the victim was a man in his 40s, but his identity has not been released.
The suspect fled on a bicycle after the shooting, police said.
Video from the scene showed at least one apparent bullet hole through a bus window.
The street was blocked off with crime-scene tape amid an investigation. Multiple police officers and patrol vehicles were at the scene as the investigation continued.
“We have video that we are going through,” Eppolito said. “We have witnesses that we are interviewing.”
Culver City released a statement that says, in part: “Our hearts are shattered. Their loss will be felt across our City team… This loss is deeply personal for our Culver CityBus team and will be felt across our entire City organization.”
“Culver CityBus service will be suspended throughout the weekend as we honor this loss and give our team time to grieve. Our hearts are with the family, loved ones and colleagues during this devastating time,” the statement added. “When services do resume, please be kind to our operators and transit team as they navigate this unimaginable tragedy.”
