ROCHESTER, Mich. — The Oakland Golden Grizzlies Volleyball team (5-10, 0-3 HL) dropped in straight sets (21-25, 24-26, 17-25) to Wright State (8-5, 3-0 HL) on Friday evening at OU Credit Union O’rena. Oakland totaled 42 kills and hit .200, including 18 kills and a strong .261 attacking percentage in the second set. The Raiders finished with 51 kills, hit .386 and held an 8-2 advantage in total blocks at the net.
Outside hitter Liv Hosford scored 15 points with 13 kills and two service aces at the line. Setter Delaney Stern recorded 33 assists and 11 digs as outside hitter Molly Reck added eight kills, 11 digs and a service ace. Middle blocker Lillian Frias finished with seven kills on a .364 hitting percentage, two blocks and an ace.
Oakland erased an 8-5 deficit with a 6-0 run in the opening set, moving ahead 11-8 behind Frias’ kill, a Frias-Stern block, Reck’s service ace and Hosford’s finish from Stern. Earlier, middle blocker Grace Cooney opened Oakland’s scoring off a Stern assist, and opposite hitter Ella Schomer and Reck added kills as Oakland worked through the Raiders’ early push. After Oakland led 12-9 on another Hosford kill, the Raiders answered to tie the set at 12-12 and later moved in front 19-16. Frias and Hosford continued to provide sideouts late, and Oakland pulled within 23-21 on a Raiders’ attack error, but the Raiders scored the final two points to take the set 25-21.
Oakland recovered from a 10-5 deficit and later led 22-20, but the Raiders finished the second set with the final two points for a 26-24 decision. Earlier, Reck’s kill and a block by Schomer and Frias helped Oakland answer two Raiders aces and move ahead 5-4. The Raiders then scored five straight points, but Schomer supplied four kills during Oakland’s push back into the set, with Hosford adding two kills and an ace as the margin tightened to 16-15. Oakland tied the set at 16-16 on a Wright State attack error and again at 20-20 on a Hosford kill, then Hosford added two more kills to put Oakland in front 22-20. Cooney delivered kills for Oakland’s final two points, including the one that tied the set at 24-24, before the Raiders closed out the set.
Oakland built an early 6-4 edge in the third set behind Frias’ opening ace, a Schomer kill, Hosford’s ace and a middle blocker Ellen Zapp kill set up by Stern. Wright State answered with four straight points to move ahead 8-6, and although Schomer, Frias and Hosford produced kills to keep Oakland within 14-12, the visitors scored the next four points to push the margin to 18-12. Oakland continued to get production from Schomer and Reck, with Reck delivering three kills in the late stages, including one from defensive specialist Kiley Gallagher that made it 23-16. Hosford added a final Oakland kill after the Raiders reached 24-16, but the Raiders closed the set on the next rally for a 25-17 finish.
Oakland is back on the Blacktop to host Northern Kentucky on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
