San Francisco is a land of many music festivals, but none captures the spirit of the city quite like Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. This weekend the festival takes over Golden Gate Park with six stages of music, and SFGATE was on the ground Friday photographing all the action.
Although longtime San Francisco residents tell tales of banjo pickers gathering in the park many years earlier than 2001, that’s when the festival was officially codified by venture capitalist and musician Warren Hellman, making 2026 its 25th year (though for 2020 it was an online show). It was originally known as Strictly Bluegrass, but the name changed in 2004 to better encapsulate the broader genres it showcases. In the following year, 2005, Dolly Parton graced a newly created Star Stage made just for her, in what’s gone down in history as one of the most iconic shows to grace the park’s Lindley Meadow.

In a sharp contrast to the steep ticket prices of other San Francisco music festivals, Hardly Strictly remains free to all thanks to seemingly bottomless funding from the Hellman Foundation. The ticketless nature of the event brings out a broad swath of the Bay Area, with families setting up picnic blankets and camping out at stages for the length of the event. Crowds over the course of the weekend are estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands.
This year’s lineup features an eclectic mix of acts, ranging from emo pioneers like Rilo Kiley to alt-country stalwart My Morning Jacket, to rock legends like Robert Plant. The Bay Area’s own Molly Tuttle is scheduled to headline the banjo stage on Friday, and Hardly Strictly veteran Emmylou Harris is scheduled to close out the festival on Sunday. Expect to hear plenty of Dolly songs, as more than a dozen acts have committed to adding a cover of the recently deceased icon‘s music to their sets.
