The NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA released an updated beach hazards statement at 1:26 p.m. on Sunday valid from Tuesday 4 p.m. until Friday 11 p.m. The statement is for Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands, Ventura County Beaches, Malibu Coast and Los Angeles.
“Dangerous rip currents and breaking waves are expected due to elevated surf of 3 to 6 feet. Abnormally high morning and evening tides of 6.5 to 7 feet is expected,” explains the NWS. “There is a moderate chance that an upgrade to Coastal Flood Advisory and/or High Surf Advisory will be needed. These products will likely need to be extended into the weekend.”
“There is an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore. Moderate flooding of sea water is possibly over some vulnerable low-lying coastal areas, especially around the morning and evening high tides, including over beach parking lots, bike paths, and harbor walkways. Moderate beach erosion is possible to likely,” comments the NWS. “Remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions, stay off the rocks.”
This statement is in effect until Friday at 11 p.m.
