National Nurses United presents: ‘Resistance and Resilience’

The “largest union and professional association of registered nurses in U.S. history,” National Nurses United, has curated a group exhibit on display this week only, through Friday, Oct. 24.The juried art exhibition, “Resistance and Resilience,” selected by multidisciplinary artist and independent curator Pallavi Sharma and artist and graphic designer Choppy Oshiro, features the work of 30 artists from across the country. The exhibit addresses issues such as labor rights, environmental health, human rights, mental health, civil rights for people with disabilities, and more.

Family-Friendly Magical Marketplace

The Sunshine Prophecy, a boutique on Piedmont Avenue, is joining forces with Modern Witches and The Rebis, two spiritual communities, for a family-friendly marketplace. The event will feature vendors selling items such as jewelry, perfumes, and candles, as well as tarot and astrology readings, and more.

Indivisible East Bay is once again hosting the “No Kings” rally in Oakland. The march is a nationwide event protesting the Trump administration. The rally in Oakland this past June drew over 10,000 participants, and the team at Indivisible expects even larger crowds this weekend.

Laura Malone’s ‘The Shimmering Self’ artist reception

Laura Malone is a member of the artist co-op Mercury Twenty Gallery, where she unveiled her latest solo exhibit titled “The Shimmering Self.” Malone worked on a variety of figurative oil paintings over the course of five years. The paintings depict the feminine body and its connection to self and its surroundings. The exhibit will be on display through Nov. 15.

OMCA Spotlight Sundays: Russell City Remembered

This weekend’s Spotlight Sundays will feature the screening of “The Apology,” a documentary that highlights the story of Russell City, a predominantly Black and brown community in an unincorporated part of what is now Hayward. Over 1,400 residents were displaced when Russell City was bulldozed in 1963 to make way for an industrial park. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring descendants of Russell City families, including film producer Aisha Knowles, Marian Johnson, and Vena Sword-Ratliff. The conversation will be moderated by KQED journalist Alexis Madrigal.
