A statue of Ben Ali, the winning horse of the 12th Kentucky Derby, was stolen in California, according to a statement from the Sacramento Police Department.

A spokesperson told The Courier Journal that it received a report of a stolen bronze horse sculpture on Del Paso Boulevard Sept. 30. Located near the intersection of Del Paso Boulevard and Winnipeg Street, the statue was cut from its pedestal, and only a bronze hoof remains, CBS Sacramento reported.

Ben Ali, born in Kentucky in 1883, spent most of his life in Sacramento, according to a 2008 report from The Sacramento Bee. During his 42-race career, his wins include the 1885 Hopeful Stakes and the 1886 Kentucky Derby.

The Sacramento Bee reported that the city installed a “near-lifesize statue” of Ben Ali in 2007 as part of a public arts project. According to a report from CBS Sacramento, the nearly 7-foot statue is now valued at around $80,000.
